Admission Procedures and Forms


NOTES:

1. Please do NOT send paper copies of GRE or TOEFL test score reports. These are unofficial and cannot be used in our evaluation. Instead, please make sure that you have asked ETS to send your official scores directly to the University of Washington (code 4854). However, paper IELTS scores may be submitted provided they are original, stamped documents.

2. The rules for submission of materials by international applicants have changed, effective November 2010. Please see the checklist at the bottom of this page for details.

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING APPLICATION PROCEDURES CAREFULLY

I. Application for Admission to the Graduate School

Applications for graduate study must be submitted online. To begin an application, use this link: Web Application.

 

II. Application Fee

The application fee is $75. Please note that in order to use the Web application, you must pay the fee online using a MasterCard or Visa card. Both credit and debit cards are accepted.

III. Supplemental Application for the Department of Economics

The supplemental application form can be completed as part of the online application as a "fillable" pdf form. We prefer that you use this method. However, if you are not able to complete the pdf online, you can download the pdf form below, print it out, and then send the completed form by mail to the Economics Department.

IV. Official GRE scores

Request that the Educational Testing Service, PO Box 6151, Princeton, NJ 08541-6151 forward your official GRE test scores to the University of Washington using institution code 4854.

GRE scores older than 5 years will not be accepted.

V. Official Transcripts

All applicants: send one copy of your official transcripts and degree statements to the Economics Department.

International applicants only: send one copy of your official transcripts and degree statements to Graduate Enrollment Management Services (required ONLY if you are recommended for admission by the department).

Domestic applicants only: if you are offered admission and choose to enroll, you should send one official transcript to Graduate Enrollment Management Services after the degree has been posted. Graduates of the University of Washington are exempt from this requirement.

VI. Official TOEFLiBT scores

All non-exempt international students: request that the Educational Testing Service, PO Box 6151, Princeton, NJ 08541-6151 forward your score reports to the University of Washington using institution code 4854. Score reports over two years old are no longer valid.

VII. Letters of Recommendation

As part of the online application, you will be asked to designate recommenders. They will then be sent a link to an online recommendation form. They will also have the option to submit a letter online or by mail.

 

HOW TO CHECK THE STATUS OF YOUR APPLICATION

After you have submitted your application, you can log back in to your application to check your status. You will be able to see whether recommendations and official transcripts have been received, and whether the department has marked your application file as complete.


Application Materials Submission Checklists (Revised November 2010)


By December 15:

In addition to the online application, the following materials must be sent to the ECONOMICS DEPARTMENT by December 15:

1. An official transcript from each postsecondary institution you have attended. If you have completed a degree and graduation confirmation is not listed on the transcript, a separate degree statement must be included.

2. If not submitted online, recommendation letters must be received by the application deadline.

Only if you are offered admission by the department:

Effective immediately, the rules have changed regarding sending materials to Graduate Enrollment Management Services (GEMS).

1. If you are a US citizen, permanent resident or immigrant, and have not attended university outside the US, no materials need to be sent to GEMS until you are offered admission and choose to enroll. If you attended a school outside the US, an official transcript need only be sent to GEMS if you are recommended for admission by the Economics Department.

2. If you are an international student, you do not need to send any materials to GEMS until you have been recommended for admission by the Economics Department. At that time, you would receive an automatic email with instructions for which materials to send.
