I am a current Economics student. How can I change my major into a New Major Option?
If you are a Bachelor of Arts (General) major, you can request to change your major to the Bachelor of Arts (International Economics) option by submitting the short form below.
If you are a Bachelor of Science (General) major, you can request to change your major to the Bachelor of Science (Data Science), Bachelor of Science (Financial Economics), or Bachelor of Science (Strategy) option, by submitting the short form below.

I am currently declared as a Bachelor of Arts student. How can I switch to the Bachelor of Science?
This pathway requires completion of MATH 125 & 126, and the submission of an application for consideration. You can refer to the Economics Admissions website for further details.
I am a Bachelor of Science student. How do I switch into the Bachelor of Arts?
This pathway does not require an application for admission. Simply submit the Economics New Major Options Declaration Form.
Can I choose more than one Economics major/option?
No. Department of Economics undergraduate students may only pursue one major option.
If I pursue a New Major Option, can I still earn a Certificate?
Yes. The Economics Certificates will be available to all students through the 2026 Summer Quarter. Students may earn a Certificate, and pursue a New Major Option, if they wish.
I have already submitted my Graduation Application, but I want to switch into a New Major Option. Can I do that?
Yes -- It's possible! Please contact Economics Advising (econadv@uw.edu), to clearly state your plans. Changes will be made to your Graduation Application accordingly.
Do I have to meet with an advisor before declaring or changing into New Major Option?
No. Changing a major requires a form to be submitted by Economics Advising. No meeting is required.
Can I switch back into the Bachelor of Arts (General) or Bachelor of Science (General) options later on, if my plans change?

I'm an international student. Are the New Major Options STEM-designated for Optional Practical Training (OPT)?
The following programs are STEM-designated, and qualify for the 24-month STEM-designated Optional Practical Training (OPT) extension. The Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) Code for the following programs is 45.0603.

- Bachelor of Science (General)
- Bachelor of Science (Data Science)
- Bachelor of Science (Financial Economics)
- Bachelor of Science (Strategy)
The Bachelor of Arts (International Economics) is not STEM-designated, and does not qualify for the STEM-designated OPT Extension. The CIP Code for this program is 45.0605.
