The Department of Economics is thrilled to announce the hiring of two new faculty members. Since last fall, search committees have been reviewing candidates for one full-time, tenure-track position in Macroeconomics at the rank of Assistant Professor, for which we received more than 400 applications, and one Assistant Teaching Professor position, for which we received more than 200 applications. The Department of Economics is delighted to announce that Ramanan Laxminarayan has been chosen as the 2020 Distinguished alumnus. Laxminarayan received his PhD in Economics from our department in 1999. In the same year, Laxminarayan completed a concurrent Master’s degree in Public Health from the UW Department of Epidemiology. On February 25th, the department’s Visiting Committee unanimously elected Cary Oshima as the new Chair to serve a two-year term. His many years of dedication to both the Visiting Committee and the department make him an ideal candidate for the position. Job Market Candidates and faculty enjoyed a few days in the sun in early January at the American Economics Association’s annual meeting, this year held in San Diego.
