The Department of Economics is delighted to celebrate the 10th year of our Undergraduate Mentorship Program. This program started with a small group of 12 mentors to balloon to around 50 a year – allowing over 75 students to be mentored last academic year! Back in 2010, a group of dedicated alumni had the idea to start a mentorship program after hearing the Economics Undergraduate Board’s presentation to the Visiting Committee, in which students requested more alumni involvement. The U.W. Women in Economics (WiE) group was established to address topics of interest to women studying or working in economics-related fields, to serve the increasing number of women studying economics, and encourage the continued growth in diversity within the field of economics. In the 2020-2021 school year, women earned nearly half of the bachelor’s degrees awarded by the U.W. Department of Economics, steadily increasing over the last two years. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has award the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel 2021 jointly to David Card of the University of California, Berkeley; Joshua Angrist from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; and Guido Imbens from Stanford University. Gardner Mallard Brown 1935 – 2021 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing and remember the contributions of our friend and colleague Professor Emeritus Gardner Mallard Brown. He served at the University of Washington for the entirety of his academic career from 1965 until he retired in 2001.
