Dear Economics Community, I am delighted to be taking on the role of Chair of the Department of Economics! I have been in the Department since 1993 and so I know it well.  In addition to my role as Chair, I am also proudly the Robert R. Richards Chaired Professor of Economics. The Department of Economics is delighted to announce that Xu Tan has been promoted to Associate Professor, with tenure. Tan was hired by the Department of Economics as an Assistant Professor in 2013. She conducted her graduate studies at Stanford University, where she received her Ph.D. in Economics in 2013, and MS in Financial Mathematics in 2011. The Department of Economics is thrilled to announce the renaming of our Access Committee to the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee. This group of faculty, staff, and students was founded in 2016 with a general aim to foster an inclusive environment for all community members, especially for students of traditionally underrepresented groups. The Roe Term Fellowship was established in June of this year to support PhD level students annually, over a five-year period. This fellowship was established by Jeff Roe and his wife, Perri. Jeff is an alumnus of the department, a member of our alumni Visiting Committee, and was honored at the 2018 Department of Economics Graduation Celebration as our Distinguished Alumnus. Each fall the Foster School of Business’s Career Center puts on one of the University’s largest Career Fairs. The fair offers students opportunities to speak with employers specifically looking to hire students in the business and economics majors. This year, employers were delighted with the number of economics students they were able to speak with. In order to ensure the safety of all participants, the 2020 event took place entirely online.
