Biography
Justine Hastings is VP and Chief of People-Centered Science for Amazon People eXperience and Technology (formerly Human Resources), and an Affiliate Professor at University of Washington. She has built and leads the PXT Central Science team which supports teams across PXT using economics, behavioral science, statistics, and machine learning to proactively identify mechanisms and process improvements that simultaneously improve Amazon and the lives, wellbeing of, and value of work to Amazonians.. She joined Amazon in December 2020. In 2021, she was named one of the top 100 Diverse Leaders in Tech by the National Diversity Counsel. Prior to joining Amazon, Justine was a tenured Professor of Economics at Brown University, and previously an Associate Professor at Yale University. She was a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research from 2003-2023. Her expertise includes Public Economics, Behavioral Economics, Labor Economics and Industrial Organization. She has contributed to scientific knowledge in the areas of education policy, workforce policy, health care, social safety-net program design, advertising and consumer protection, and market structure and competition. She served as an academic advisor to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau for five years. Justine received her PhD in Economics from UC Berkeley, and her bachelor’s degree from UC Davis.
